NOTES.

James BODENHAM became a church warden for Minsterworth. He seems to have had only one child by Sarah, possibly named after his nephew John who was drowned in 1770. There is as yet no further information on this first son John, who, born in 1774, is too young to be the father of the children shown on BOD -2/ 1.

It seems most likely that father James after losing his first wife Sarah in 1775 met and married Elizabeth, above, and had more family in Harescombe, before, upon dying in 1797, being buried back in Minsterworth. No known family with 3rd wife Ann. (James by then aged 54)

It seems that this family and those of James brothers William & (step-b) Samuel vacated Minsterworth soon after the flood disaster there in 1770 to live in the Arlingham/Harescombe area. Probably all were employed in agriculture. Their wills show them specifically as ‘brothers’, so this indicates the dispersal from Minsterworth of the surname Bodenham, which otherwise is inexplicable.

The surname spelling used in the Arlingham/Harescombe area was ‘BODNUM’, same as their cottage name at Minsterworth.

(For reference purposes, sheet BOD -3/ 2 was scrapped, its information applying to this sheet).
