NOTES

As of the present ( 2003) the 1901 census is revealing a little information on this family, using the above names, gleaned from the 1881 census. On the computer version of the census, the surname is transcribed as ‘BODNAM’. On the 1851 census where William senior is a lodger in a house in the Lydney area, his surname is shown as ‘BODENHAM’, but his father William’s surname is written as ‘BODINHAM’. On the marriage certificate of the elder William, his surname is shown as ‘BODNUM’.,or BODNAM’ Obviously, education was lacking at the time. (See also the applicable 1881 census sheet wherein the given name spellings are poor, showing an ongoing illiteracy. Spellings generally seem to follow how the name was pronounced in the local idiom).

The above William, the father, was the younger brother of Daniel. A letter from Edith HAAS from America, elsewhere in this book, indicates his questionable morals, and provides the reason why he seems to have been ostracised by Daniel’s side of the family.

Alexander ‘BODNAM’ seems to have married in the first quarter of 1892, ‘Monmouth, Cert. No. 11 a 24’. (to Annie Louisa HOWELL).

‘John BODNAM’ seems to be married to ‘Catherine M. (JONES)’ by 1901 census, wherein Alexander is a crane driver living at Coleford, with 2 children, (Glos.) and John is a colliers engine stoker at Llanwonno, (Glamorgan), no children mentioned. They may turn up later, so a page reference number is assigned to them.

‘William H. b.1860(3)’, after his marriage at Swansea in 1887(2), seems to have emigrated to Illinois. This family being researched (12/2007) and has now been deduced (2008), due to the enormous increase in information available on the internet. As of May, 2008, certificate information says that the marriage of Ann to William was her second. Her first was to Robert Treasure at Newport in 1857(3), but Robert died at Pontypool 1858(2). There could have been offspring, but no confirmation has been yet discovered.
