NOTES:-

*** This page differs from the one in the Bodenham Genealogy folder ***

The use of a surname in with a Christian name can denote either the use of an associated family surname, or the name and surname of a known illegitimate father. In this case the use of ‘John’ for a second time seems suspicious, especially as this child is not mentioned in the subsequent Will., unless there were 2 ‘Johns’ & one died, or one of the offspring (the second one?) is not relevant to this sheet at all.

There is good reason to think that this is a Gloucestershire family, other than the fact it is based here in Gloucestershire parishes. The combination of the Christian name ‘Robert’ with this surname is quite unusual, and its usage seems to be concentrated in this area. The reason the definite connection is missing may well be that the baptism of Robert circa 1757 did not occur, perhaps on personal religious beliefs.

The Will of Robert, appended behind this sheet, shows discrepancy with the above IGI information. The first mentioned child is ‘James’, who has now been found and most probably was the eldest. Presumably sister Mariah was not christened, so has been added, but without dates,. In order, the legatees are sons James, John, Edward, Joseph, & Charles, and daughters Mariah (?) married to James Tombs of Gloucester, Sarah, wife of Robert Long of Bristol, and Mary, wife of James Ston (Stone?) of Gloucester. Also mentioned are the 2 children (Henry & Mary Ann) of his son Robert BODENHAM, who, it says, was deceased at the time of writing the Will, (1824). (His burial date is now shown above). I wonder whether the eldest son (James) on this sheet inherited his Christian name from ‘James’ of Minsterworth, signifying that the two families (Minsterworth & the Huntley/Taynton/Newent area) knew of each other and were distantly connected? Taynton & Huntley as villages are very close to each other (about 2 miles) geographically, and, in fact, within good walking distance of 7 miles were also Minsterworth, Longhope, Highnam, Oxenhall, Newent, and the outskirts of Gloucester city, i.e. many of the locations mentioned.
